We wanted to mark this special anniversary by celebrating how far we’ve come, and we have some exciting new things to share with you!

We’ve got some exciting news to share, and because it’s our birthday, we’re also giving you a special gift! Keep an eye out for more details! 😉

*Well, technically tomorrow, but you know… It’s Saturday.

The Tainted Grail journey

Let’s take a quick trip back in time! Before it was the Avalon we all know and love, this place had a completely different story…

I first got my hands on Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon on March 30th, 2023, when it launched in Early Access on Steam. It was great that they didn’t just sell it, though! They also gave a free copy to everyone who’d supported the Tainted Grail board game way back when. That meant there was a huge group of us getting to play and give feedback right from the start, which was awesome!

If you’re new to the game, you might not realize this, but for more than two years before the official launch, it was constantly evolving based on feedback and involvement from our community.

We began with version 0.5, which was a very early, ambitious starting point for what we hoped would be a truly open-world RPG. Back then, Avalon looked quite different! Many of the game’s systems were just initial ideas, and some were barely functional. We had rough sketches and concepts for locations, creatures, and how things would work – exciting ideas, but still needing a lot of development. Over time, these ideas changed significantly. We repeatedly reworked, expanded, or even completely replaced gameplay systems. Storylines were rewritten and improved to better fit the game world. We redesigned the user interface countless times… the list goes on! Throughout all of this, our incredible community has been a constant source of support and motivation.

This trailer quickly highlights the key moments and achievements of Tainted Grail. Prepare to feel nostalgic, just like we did while making it!

Your feedback was invaluable throughout the development process. It influenced everything from minor tweaks to significant redesigns. You weren’t afraid to point out problems – and even break things! – which helped us improve the game. You often challenged our thinking and steered us in unexpected, but ultimately positive, directions (like with the original prologue or the Mistbearer). That’s exactly what we hoped for! We wanted to release features quickly, get your reactions, and then refine them based on your input – and it worked wonderfully.

Here’s a look at some of the initial artwork, concepts, and early versions of game features and graphics. While some of these ideas ended up in the final game, others evolved significantly or were changed completely.

It’s fascinating to look back at these early images – they really show the roots of what Avalon has grown into! From the very first versions, like 0.5, to the current release, you can see how it all started. Here are some behind-the-scenes glimpses at the development process!

Free anniversary DLC

As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear about the birthday gifts! They just released a free Anniversary DLC, and it’s awesome! It’s got these incredible new armor sets and weapons, plus a special birthday skin for Qrko. Seriously, they made him SO cute – especially with that little festive hat! But get this… there’s even more coming!

To keep things a surprise for those who want to discover everything on their own, we’re leaving out screenshots. If you’re eager to get a peek at what’s new, take a look at the Anniversary DLC trailer and the additional information provided below.

What to expect?

  • Okay, so Qrko’s having a birthday, and it’s a big deal! They’re really getting into the spirit with this awesome new birthday hat – seriously, it looks amazing. Honestly, after everything they’ve done, they deserve a great party. As for whether I get anything out of this… well, I guess I’ll just have to play and find out!

  • A new adventure, «Birthday Quest,» begins with a strange invitation you get after completing the Cuanacht story. It leads you to a secret birthday celebration for King Arthur. Investigate to find out what’s really going on and collect a valuable reward – you won’t be disappointed!

  • We’ve added some exciting new items! Finish the Birthday Quest to unlock 5 new armor sets, plus a wand and a bow. These items introduce unique abilities and let you experiment with different ways to play. We’re eager to see the creative and powerful builds you come up with!

  • We listened to your feedback! We realized the achievement requiring you to catch every fish was frustratingly difficult, even for dedicated players. That’s why we’ve added a new option: you can now simply purchase the fish you need.

So, is it cheating? Yes. Is it a little shady for a famous hero to pretend they caught their own fish when they actually bought them at the market just to impress people? Definitely. But will anyone fault you for it? Not at all.

Beyond that, we’ve improved the fishing minigame. If you prefer to earn your catches honestly, you should find it more fun now.

Just so you know, we’ve added two new items for fishing fans! You can earn the Royal Fishing Rod by consistently fishing, and the Angler’s Cap… let’s just say obtaining it will require a bit of a challenge.

A year in numbers

As a huge fan, I was blown away by the new trailer! It breaks down all sorts of amazing stats from the past year – some were incredible, others totally surprised me, and a few had me doing a double-take! It’s really cool to see all our collective adventures summed up in numbers, and I think everyone will love checking it out.

Limited Collector’s & Deluxe Sets

Many of you have asked about physical copies, and we’re excited to announce a limited sale! We’ll have 500 Collector’s Sets and 1000 Deluxe Sets available. Please note these sets don’t include the game itself – we figured you already own it! – but they’re a great way to own a piece of the Avalon universe in the real world.

I’m so excited! It sounds like these are going fast – first come, first served, so you better jump on it if you want one! You could end up with Arthur as part of your collection, which would be amazing!

Prices can change based on where you live because of taxes and import fees. We currently only deliver to select areas.

Patch Notes 1.23

Finally, a new version of the game is available with the latest free downloadable content! Check out the patch notes for version 1.23 to see what’s changed.

Gameplay

  • Fisher King’s Successor can now be completed by buying fish from a vendor.

  • Increased Sanguine Sting health cost from 5 to 10.

  • We’ve adjusted how Sanguine Sting’s bleed effect scales. It now correctly increases with your Arrow Draw Strength, fixing a problem caused by recently added items that made it too powerful.

  • Completing the Lancelot dungeon now rewards Summon Sir Lancelot.

  • The Sarras DLC had a bug where skipping the opening cutscene at a certain point could prevent players from progressing. This update fixes that issue.

  • Fixed a crash caused by Frozen Seer’s Vestment due to a stack overflow with certain other skills.

Quest

  • In the «The Price of Healing» ending, the hospital, which is now sponsored by Yvain, Measured Mercy, and Oh Merry Men, will no longer lead to an impossible situation and will instead fail as intended.

  • Fixed duplicate rewards in Happily Ever After and Brotherly Love.

  • Fixed an issue where Denholm did not reward the player for siding with Kamelot during Menhir Rites.

  • Fixed dialogue flow and looping issues with H’jarn.

  • Resolved an issue where the wrong slides would show at the end of the game after finishing the Children of Morrigan quest and defeating Self.

  • Fixed duplicate dialogue with Deirdre during Unholy Matrimony.

  • Updated The Weight of Honor quest marker to point to Gert’s area instead of directly to him.

  • Fixed incorrect quest progression in the Brotherly Love quest.

  • Stealing Daisy will now block dialogue about her with Rob and Gil.

  • Fixed instances of Maggot disappearing during the Have a Nice Trip quest.

  • Fixed dialogue with Rob where the player could speak about Wyrd lanterns without them being present.

UI

  • Added keyword descriptions to the Challenge Mode debuff selection screen.

  • Removed the unused Filter Items keybind from control settings.

  • Added a Sort Items keybind to keyboard controls.

  • Fixed tutorials overlapping quick-use items.

  • Fixed incorrect gamepad keybind icons in tutorials.

  • We fixed a problem with the character status list where it wouldn’t scroll correctly when a character had many active debuffs.

  • Fixed cut menu expansion panels on specific UI settings.

System

  • Added small optimizations, especially in fights with many NPCs.

  • [PC] Fixed target FPS options when not in fullscreen mode with VSync On not behaving correctly.

Challenge Mode

  • Recurring Threat: Reduced Arcane Discharge spawn count from 5 to 1.

  • Seek and Destroy: Reduced Arcane Discharge repeat strike chance from 33% to 15%.

  • Fixed Avarice not properly increasing item upgrade costs.

  • Fixed Arcane Discharge sometimes displaying an oversized visual radius.

  • Fixed Corpsewake projectiles orbiting the hero when dodged and striking from offscreen.

  • Increased Corpsewake base damage from 10 to 25.

Misc

  • We fixed a problem where Eogan would sometimes show up in multiple locations at night. He will now only be found in the rooftop garden.

  • Added audio for the Floatling enemy.

  • Summons of the Knights of the Round Table now have unique one-liners.

That’s it for today! Let’s celebrate!

The last year has been amazing for us, and we’re so grateful for your support! Thank you for joining us in Avalon and sharing your thoughts, enthusiasm, and ideas. We have a lot more exciting things planned and aren’t stopping anytime soon.

I hope you all love the little presents we made! And please, don’t forget to put those adorable festive hats on your Qrkos – they deserve to celebrate too!

We’re about to have a huge celebration in Avalon! And to make it even more special, the legendary King Arthur is being brought back to life just for the party. Let the fun begin!

See you out there,
Awaken Realms / Questline
